Did you know that Stig Carlson Architecture also provides visualization services? We utilize computer modeling programs such as SketchUp and Podium SU to create interior and exterior renderings of your project that can be utilized for marketing or fundraising efforts. Computer modeling is also included as part of the “basic services” in all of our design projects, including residential work.

Birch Bay House

This is a small house located in the seaside community of Birch Bay in the NW corner of Washington State. Designed for a retired single woman, the home was sized for efficiency and a simple, casual lifestyle. Though not ultimately certified, this home was originally projected to receive a LEED for Homes Gold rating.

KCLT Indiana Street Housing

Bennett Hart, a recent University of Oregon graduate and I have been working on an exciting affordable housing project in the Birchwood neighborhood of Bellingham, WA. The project is a collaboration between Kulshan Community Land Trust, the Northwest Washington chapter of the AIA and Habitat for Humanity. Three teams of architects and interns were selected to design homes for four different, adjacent sites. The interns have been doing the bulk of the work with support (moral and otherwise) provided by the architect mentors.

Two of the homes will be single-family residences constructed by Habitat for Humanity and two of the homes will be single-family homes with attached ADUs constructed by Kulshan-selected contractors. The Habitat homes will be designed to meet Passive House standards with 12″ thick exterior walls, extremely tight envelopes, passive heating and cooling strategies, triple-glazed windows and energy efficient mini-split heat pump heating systems. Here are some renderings or our design that Ben created for presentation at the NWAIA awards in December.

Mercer Island Remodel & Addition

Completed in 2010, this was one of the more interesting projects I’ve been involved with. This house was about 50% complete when the contractor pretty-much just walked away from the job, leaving a shell-of-a-building on a beautiful view lot on the west side of Mercer Island. My clients purchased the property “as-is” and hired me to help complete & modify the structure and to design a two-story addition with new entry and kid’s bedrooms above.

Coupeville Front Street Deck

Work continues on the design of a new public deck for the Town of Coupeville. Stig Carlson Architecture was retained by the Town to create a concept for a deck that will eventually be constructed on a vacant waterfront parcel in Coupeville’s downtown Front Street area. The design of the deck is inspired by the historic wharfs that had been located near the property and will provide public beach access and a large gathering space towards the east end of Front Street.

Union Hill Residence

This 3,000 square foot home is under construction on a 2 1/2 acre rural site outside of Redmond, Washington. The owners requested a “farmhouse”-style structure to fit in with the pastoral setting. All living spaces (with the exception of a small accessory dwelling unit above the garage) are located on the ground floor level and are designed to be completely wheelchair accessible to meet the needs of the owners. The open floor plan features ample circulation space, wide doorways, minimal thresholds, curb-less shower in the master bath, appropriate counter heights and exterior ramps – all of which allow for ease of use and accessibility.

Whidbey Island Residence

This 3,800 square foot home is located on a beautifully wooded 30-acre site near the town of Langley on Whidbey Island, Washington. The owners requested a design that would be as unobtrusive as possible and take advantage of views into surrounding woods and meadows. To meet that goal, the home was located in an existing clearing and floor levels follow the topography to lessen the visual impact of the structure. The roofline features gently sloping planes that step up and down to mimic the adjacent tree-line and break-up the overall mass of the building. The home was designed and is being constructed with many healthy features including all low or zero VOC finishes and products, radiant heating, natural ventilation, rainscreen siding system and many other innovative approaches to building a non-toxic home (more on this in a future blog….).
